Suddenly, I realize there’s no guarantee these people will be willing to talk to me. With the chancellor in their ear telling them they have nothing to worry about, the rumors aren’t true, then they’re probably not open to discussing things for fear they’ll get into trouble.

I pull down the FFKNCS flier and stuff it into my bag, deciding I’ll pretend to be a new student. I can easily pass as one in my high ponytail, skinny jeans, simple T-shirt, and Converse. I’d dressed for comfort today, knowing I’d be walking around the convention center for hours. That sounded more likely to get answers to my questions after the meeting, instead of freaking them out with “I’m searching for clues to stop a serial killer targeting your group.”

I walk farther into the coffee shop, looking around to see if I can spot anyone who might be waiting for a meeting to begin. Most of the tables taken up are occupied by couples, sets of people with their books open along with their laptops. It’s not very crowded—not surprising since it’s spring break. Finally, I spot a round table near the stage at the back of the shop. No one has anything out, not a computer or book in sight, and I have a feeling this is the group I’m looking for.

Heading toward them, I wait until I’m close and then pull out the flier, hoping they see me getting it out of my bag and will think I’ve had it a while instead of just having swiped it from the board. When I approach, I hike my purse up higher on my shoulder and greet them with a warm smile.

“Hi there. Is this FFK support group? My name is Clar—” I clear my throat, rethinking giving them my real name. “Excuse me. Claire. I just moved here from out of state, and someone on campus gave me this.” I hold out the flier.

A young man, maybe twenty-three, in black-rimmed glasses stands and holds out his hand. “Yes, that’s us. Nice to meet you, Claire. I’m Ciprian. Welcome to the group,” he tells me, and I shake his hand before circling the table and taking a seat between a guy and girl, who both look like they’re freshmen; so freaking young. And it hurts my heart knowing there is someone out there raping and killing these kids.

“Thank you. And cool name. I wasn’t sure if you’d be meeting tonight since the campus is like a ghost town. I’m starting in the mini-semester that begins next week,” I tell them, hoping that’s still a thing. It’s been a long time since I was in college, almost ten years.

“Ah, you’re brave,” Ciprian says, his eyes twinkling behind his glasses in the dim lighting. “They pack so much information into such a short time. I don’t see how y’all can handle those mini-mesters.”

I smile, trying to think of what to say next, but I’m thankfully saved from having to speak again when a blonde girl hurries up to the table, hooking her bag onto the back of a chair before plopping into it.
